What is ChatGPT, and what are you actually subscribing to?

ChatGPT is OpenAI’s chat service. A paid personal plan gives your own account more access to models, tools or usage capacity; it is not the same thing as buying the developer API.

If you searched for this tutorial, you probably do not need a grand speech about artificial intelligence. You want to know what ChatGPT is, which plan makes sense, and how to get a subscription working from Hong Kong. Fair enough. Here is the short version first: ChatGPT is a web and mobile service where you ask questions, upload material, write, translate, plan, research and work through problems with an AI assistant.

The subscription belongs to an account. That point matters throughout this guide. If you already have a ChatGPT account, the paid access should be added to that account. If you do not have one, create it with an email address you control. Do not begin with an account made by a supplier and hope you can take it back later.

Why Hong Kong users need a different subscription route

Hong Kong is not shown on OpenAI’s current supported-country list, so a normal Hong Kong sign-up or payment may not complete; that is why users look for a third-party subscription added to their own ChatGPT account.

OpenAI’s published support list is the reason the normal sign-up flow can stop for Hong Kong users. As checked for this article on 21 September 2026, Hong Kong was not listed. In practical terms, you may reach the ChatGPT page but still be unable to complete the plan purchase with a normal Hong Kong account or payment method.

That is the whole background. The practical route described here is simple: use a stable VPN connection, use a third-party top-up or subscription service, and add the paid access to your own ChatGPT account. The author is currently using chongzhi.chat; other suppliers exist, but the screenshots, price and wording on any supplier page can change.

This guide is not asking you to understand a maze of policy language before you can begin. Start with the steps below. If the official route works for your account, use it. If it does not, continue with the third-party route and keep the account in your own name.

Before you start: prepare these four things

Have your own ChatGPT account, a working VPN, a payment method for the supplier and a clear plan choice ready before you begin.

Your own ChatGPT accountGo to chatgpt.com and sign in with an email address you can access. If you are new, create the account yourself first.
A stable VPN connectionTurn it on before you open the subscription or top-up pages. Keep the same connection during the short sign-up session rather than jumping between locations.
A plan in mindFor ordinary use, start by comparing the paid personal plans. The supplier page may show different labels or prices, so read the current wording before you pay.
A record of the orderKeep the supplier page, order number, amount, account email and payment receipt. It takes a minute and saves a lot of searching later.

The most important preparation is not technical. It is making sure you know which email address is signed in to ChatGPT. People sometimes pay for the right plan while logged into the wrong account, then think the subscription disappeared. Before you pay, open the profile menu and note the email shown there.

Use the official ChatGPT sign-in page whenever a supplier sends you to log in. A supplier can provide a recharge key or payment assistance, but your email, password and one-time verification code should not be passed around in a customer-service chat.

Step 1 to Step 6: subscribe with VPN plus third-party top-up

This is the practical sequence currently used by the author: open your own account, connect the VPN, use the third-party top-up page, complete the plan purchase and check the result inside ChatGPT.

The author is currently using chongzhi.chat for this route. At the time of research, its page displayed a recommended first-time or renewal item for GPT and Codex Plus at ¥169 and a GPT Pro item at ¥880. Treat those as the supplier’s current display, not a permanent price list.

If the website feels fiddly, use the WeChat contact shown on the supplier’s page and ask them to help you complete the subscription. I’m also currently contacting them on WeChat to help me subscribe to ChatGPT, and my own process took about five minutes. That is my current experience, not a promise that every order will take the same time.

Open ChatGPT firstVisit chatgpt.com, sign in to your own account and confirm the email in the profile menu. Leave this tab available.
Turn on the VPNConnect before opening the payment or top-up page. Use one stable location for the session and do not keep changing servers halfway through.
Open the supplier pageOpen chongzhi.chat and read the plan name, amount, renewal wording and instructions shown on that day.
Choose the planSelect the option that matches your use. If you only need normal writing, study or work help, do not jump straight to the most expensive plan just because it is there.
Complete the top-up for your own accountFollow the provider’s current recharge instructions. If a login is required, use the official ChatGPT login page. Do not send your password, one-time code or recovery code to a person in chat.
Return to ChatGPTOpen the profile or settings area and check whether the paid plan now appears. Do not assume payment success and subscription activation are the same screen.

The short version

Step 7: check that the subscription has actually arrived

Payment is only finished when the paid plan is visible on the same ChatGPT account you intended to use.

Check the emailOpen the profile menu and confirm that the signed-in email is the one you gave the supplier or used for the recharge.
Check the plan labelOpen Settings or the account area and look for the active paid plan. The exact menu name can change, so follow the label shown in your current interface.
Check the toolsTry the feature you paid for, such as higher usage, file work or another plan-specific tool. Do not judge the result from a supplier screenshot alone.
Check renewal or expiry informationSave the date, renewal wording and receipt. If the plan is a one-time top-up rather than an automatic renewal, write that down.
If it is missing, stop and checkRefresh once, confirm the account email and contact the supplier with the order number. Do not buy another plan before you know where the first payment went.

If the paid plan appears on your computer but not in the mobile app, check that both are signed in to the same email. That small detail causes a surprising number of “it did not work” messages.

If a supplier asks you to send a password or a verification code after payment, pause. Use the official ChatGPT sign-in page yourself, and keep the recovery email and security settings under your control. You are buying access for your account, not handing the account over.

Which ChatGPT plan should Hong Kong users choose?

Choose by how often you use ChatGPT and which tool is slowing you down; do not choose by the biggest label on the page.

OpenAI’s current pricing page is the place to check the official plan names and features. A supplier may use a familiar plan name while handling the payment separately, so compare the plan shown inside ChatGPT with the description you paid for.

If you are only curious, start small. If you are using ChatGPT to draft client work every day, the time saved may justify a paid plan. The answer is not mysterious; use the service for a week, notice what stops you, then pay for that specific problem.

Once the plan is active, give ChatGPT a clear task and a Hong Kong context; that is where the subscription starts earning its keep.

The best first use is usually boring and useful: an email you need to send, a document you need to understand, a meeting you need to prepare for, or a messy list that needs sorting. Start there. You will learn much faster than by asking it to write a grand essay about the future.

A good default

Tell ChatGPT who the audience is, what you want to produce, what it must not assume and how you want the answer formatted. Then read the result before you send it to anyone.

ChatGPT Hong Kong subscription tutorial: common questions

For most Hong Kong users, the process is: use your own account, use the current third-party top-up route, and confirm the paid plan inside ChatGPT.

Can I subscribe directly from Hong Kong?

OpenAI’s current supported-country list does not show Hong Kong, so the ordinary direct sign-up or payment route may not work. Check the official page first; if it stops there, this tutorial explains the third-party route.

Is a VPN by itself enough?

No. A VPN only changes the connection route. You still need a ChatGPT account, a payment or top-up step and a paid plan that appears in that account.

Does the third-party subscription go into my own ChatGPT account?

That is the setup this tutorial is describing. Sign in to your own account, follow the supplier’s current instructions and verify the plan in ChatGPT afterwards. Do not start with a supplier-owned account.

Should I send the supplier my password or verification code?

No. Use the official ChatGPT login page yourself. Keep the password, email access, one-time codes and recovery settings under your control.

The payment is complete but I cannot see Plus or Pro. What should I do?

Check the account email first, refresh once, look in Settings or the profile area, and then contact the supplier with the order number. Do not pay for a second plan until the first order is explained.

Can I use the subscription on my phone and computer?

Usually, the plan follows the ChatGPT account rather than one device. Sign in with the same account on both devices and check that the paid plan is shown.

Is ChatGPT Plus the same as the API?

No. ChatGPT is the user-facing service. The API is a separate developer product with separate billing and setup.
