ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE / RESEARCH TOOL

Perplexity AI Explained: How It Searches, Cites Sources and Fits Into Real Work

Perplexity AI is more than a chatbot with a search button. Learn how its answer engine works, how to read citations, when to use Projects and files, and where you still need your own judgement.

01 / ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

What Perplexity AI actually does

Perplexity AI is a search-first AI answer engine. It searches the live web, combines information from several pages and presents a readable answer with citations beside the claims. Think of it as a research assistant with a browser open — useful, quick, and still very capable of being wrong.

That last part matters. Perplexity is not simply ChatGPT wearing a search icon, and it is not Google with the blue links ironed flat. Its centre of gravity is the answer: a compact explanation that lets you follow the evidence without opening twelve tabs and forgetting why you opened the first one.

The name is easy to misunderstand because Perplexity also gives you access to different underlying models, depending on the product and plan. The model writes and reasons; Perplexity supplies the search layer, source handling and research workflow around it. Those pieces overlap, but they are not the same thing.

For a student checking a difficult concept, a marketer comparing competitors, or a founder trying to understand a new market before Monday morning, that distinction is more useful than another round of “which AI is smartest?”

02 / HOW IT WORKS

Why it feels more like search than chat

A normal chatbot begins with what it already knows in the conversation. Perplexity begins by deciding whether the question needs fresh information, then searches for pages that can move the answer forward. The result is usually shorter than a research paper but more traceable than a loose paragraph produced from memory.

The borders are not hard walls. ChatGPT can browse. Google now adds more generated answers. Perplexity can write, analyse files and use more than one model. The practical difference is the default posture: Perplexity asks, “What should I search and cite for this?” before it asks, “How can I phrase the reply?”

That is why it often feels particularly good for questions with a moving answer — current prices, software changes, policy updates, product specifications, academic references, or the slightly annoying question of what a company actually announced rather than what ten blogs repeated.

03 / THE ANSWER PIPELINE

What actually happens after you press enter?

Pressing Enter starts a small chain of decisions. The exact machinery changes across modes, but the user-facing pattern is fairly simple:

  1. Read the question. It identifies the subject, time range, location, language and the kind of answer you seem to want.
  2. Search the web.It retrieves pages and, in some modes, performs several searches rather than betting everything on one query.
  3. Choose useful material.Titles, snippets, page content, domains and freshness influence what gets carried into the answer.
  4. Synthesise. The language model turns the retrieved material into an explanation, comparison or set of steps.
  5. Attach citations.Links point you towards the pages used, so you can inspect the supporting context instead of taking the prose on faith.

Perplexity describes itself as an intelligent research assistant that synthesises multiple sources. That is a helpful mental model, as long as you do not quietly replace “synthesises” with “verifies”. It can combine five pages into one confident answer without noticing that all five copied the same mistake.

For a casual question, this is wonderfully convenient. For health, law, money, safety, academic work or a decision that will be expensive to reverse, open the sources and inspect them. It is only a few extra clicks. Annoying, yes. Cheaper than repairing a bad assumption, also yes.

04 / SOURCES

Citations are useful — and easy to overtrust

Citations are Perplexity’s most recognisable feature, and probably its most misunderstood one. A small number next to a sentence feels reassuring; sometimes it is exactly what you need. It is still not a court stamp.

A citation is a receipt for where the answer looked, not a guarantee that the answer understood everything on the page.

I read citations in four passes. First, check the publisher: an official regulator, company filing, university, standards body or original research paper usually deserves more weight than a recycled “top ten” page. Second, check the date — especially for prices, software, politics and anything involving rules. Third, open the relevant passage rather than only the homepage. Fourth, ask whether the source actually supports the wording, or merely mentions the same keyword.

You can improve the result by asking for primary sources, publication dates, a source table, direct quotations or a clear split between established facts and inference. That extra sentence changes the job from “make this sound convincing” to “show me how you know”. A small change, but it puts your hands back on the steering wheel.

05 / ASKING BETTER QUESTIONS

How to ask a question that gets a researchable answer

People often blame an AI search tool when the question is really three jobs wearing one oversized coat. “Tell me everything about electric cars” has no finish line. “Compare the 2026 charging options for a Hong Kong apartment owner, using official Hong Kong sources where possible, and put the installation limits and costs in separate columns” gives the tool somewhere to go.

A useful question = subject + place + time + decision + evidence standard + output shape
  • Name the decision: what are you trying to choose, explain or verify?
  • Give a boundary: Hong Kong, Mainland China, the UK, this month, the 2026 version — whatever actually matters.
  • Set the evidence bar: official sources only, academic sources, company filings, or a balanced mix.
  • Choose the shape: a short answer, comparison table, timeline, source map or a list of open questions.
  • Tell it what not to do: do not treat marketing copy as independent evidence; flag missing data instead of filling the gap.

For a working professional, a useful request might be: “Research the latest changes to this software platform for a small marketing team in Hong Kong. Separate confirmed product features from rumours, cite the release notes, and finish with what needs testing before we change our process.” That is not fancy prompting. It is simply giving the researcher a brief.

If the first answer is off, correct the direction rather than starting from zero: “Keep the same question, but remove vendor blogs, add government sources, and show the date for every claim.” Follow-up questions are where Perplexity starts to feel less like a search box and more like a working conversation.

06 / REAL-WORLD USE

Where it earns its place at work and in class

The strongest use cases are not glamorous. They are the jobs that leave a trail of tabs behind them.

STUDY

Break a difficult topic into definitions, opposing views, original papers and a short revision map. Ask for the source beside every major claim.

WORK

Turn a new market, supplier category or software change into a brief that colleagues can challenge rather than a paragraph nobody can audit.

DECIDE

Compare products, policies or services against the criteria you actually care about — warranty, location, date, compatibility, total cost.

For Hong Kong users, local wording matters more than people expect. “Tax” can mean very different things across jurisdictions; “company registration” and “business registration” are not interchangeable; a product available in the United States may not be available here at all. Add the region and ask Perplexity to retain the local terms. Otherwise the answer may sound polished while quietly drifting across borders.

For students, use it as a map and a sparring partner, not as a button that writes the assignment while you watch a drama. Ask it to explain a theory in two levels, challenge your interpretation, find the original paper and point out where the evidence is weak. You still need to read. That is the bit people keep trying to uninstall.

07 / YOUR OWN MATERIAL

Files, images, audio and video: the second search box

Perplexity can work with more than web pages. Its current Help Center lists text files, PDFs, images, code, audio and video among the supported uploads. Short files can be analysed in full; longer files may be reduced to the portions most relevant to the question. Audio and video can be transcribed and made searchable, including speaker labels, while visual scenes inside video are not currently indexed in the same way.

That makes the attachment button a second search box. Drop in a long report and ask for the three assumptions that drive its recommendation. Add a screenshot and ask which number is missing. Upload an interview recording and look for where two speakers disagree. The useful question is rarely “summarise this”; it is “what should I notice before I make a decision?”

One quiet warning about files

Do not upload confidential contracts, customer records, private keys or sensitive personal information simply because the attach button is convenient. Check your organisation’s rules, the account type and the product’s current privacy settings before treating an online AI service like a locked filing cabinet.

For a long document, ask for page numbers or quoted passages. For code, include the runtime and the error message. For audio, say what counts as an important moment. Context is not decoration here; it is the difference between a useful search and a confident shrug.

08 / PROJECTS

Projects turn one-off searches into ongoing work

Perplexity’s current product language calls these persistent, shareable workspaces Projects. A Project can keep searches, Computer tasks, files, instructions and connected tools in one place. That is a different animal from a chat history: the work has a home, a set of rules and, if you choose, other people who can see it.

A sensible Project might hold a competitor research brief, a product launch, a university reading list or a client account. Add the preferred domains, the definitions your team uses and the files that should be treated as background. The point is not to make a colourful folder. It is to stop explaining the same context on Tuesday that you explained on Monday.

There are a couple of details worth keeping straight. Files added from a connected source are one-time copies, so a later change in Google Drive or another connector does not automatically rewrite the copy inside the Project. Fetch the latest version or add it again when freshness matters. Project permissions matter too: shared files are visible to members with the appropriate access, and editors have more power than viewers.

The Help Center also describes Brain as ongoing project-level memory, with controls over whether it runs automatically or manually. If a Project becomes important, read those settings. “It remembers the context” is handy; “it remembers the wrong context forever” is how small mistakes get promoted.

09 / PLANS AND MODELS

Free, Pro and the model menu

The free experience is enough to understand the basic idea: ask a question, watch the sources appear, open a few, and see whether the rhythm suits you. Pro is aimed at heavier research and adds a wider set of capabilities. The current Help Center lists more citations per answer, increased file and photo uploads, extended access to Research, Create features, enhanced image generation and a changing menu of supported models.

PlanCurrent official listingA sensible fit

File and photo uploadsHow much of your own material can sit beside the webFile limits, retention and workspace permissions
Research / CreateWhether the service can build longer reports or outputsWhat the feature actually produces in your region and plan
Computer credits are a separate meter

The current credits page says 100 credits equals US$1. Typical light tasks are listed at roughly 100–350 credits, complex tasks at 350–950, and heavy tasks at 875–2,275. These are examples rather than guarantees; plan, region, promotions and task complexity can change the real usage.

At the time of writing, Perplexity’s Pro help page gives examples including GPT-5.2, Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Gemini 3.1 Pro. Treat that as a dated product snapshot, not a permanent promise; model menus change quickly. The useful question is not whether the menu contains a famous name. It is whether the mode produces reliable work for your own tasks at a cost and speed you can live with.

In other words, do not subscribe just to collect another badge. Run three real searches first: one current question, one long document, and one comparison where the source quality matters. If it saves you from opening twenty tabs and still leaves you able to check the answer, then you have a reason.

10 / FOR DEVELOPERS

Perplexity for developers: Search API and Agent API

Perplexity is also a developer platform, not only a consumer search page. Its current documentation separates a Search API, which returns ranked web results as structured data, from an Agent API, which can produce a model-generated answer with search results and other steps in the response. That distinction is important when you are building a product.

API routeWhat comes backA sensible use
Search APIRanked results and extracted content, with controls for domains, language and regionBuild your own retrieval, filters, citations or research interface
Agent APIA typed output containing answer messages and search-result stepsLet an agent search, reason, use tools and return a finished response
Internal / connected sourcesOrganisation or private context alongside web search, where enabledAnswer questions that need both public facts and company material

The documentation also describes tools such as code execution in a sandbox, MCP connections and access to multiple model families through the Agent API. That makes the platform interesting for research assistants, support tools and internal knowledge systems — but it also raises the stakes around permissions, prompt injection, data leakage and approval flows.

If you are building, start with raw search results before adding an autonomous loop. Log the query, domains, retrieved pages, answer and final user action. A demo that sounds clever is easy; a system whose evidence you can inspect at 3 a.m. is the real engineering job.

11 / LIMITS

Where Perplexity still trips over its own shoelaces

Perplexity’s best feature creates its most obvious risk: it makes research feel finished before you have actually checked it. A page can be current but wrong. A source can be reputable but irrelevant to your exact question. A citation can sit beside a sentence that stretches beyond what the source supports.

Search ranking also shapes the answer. English sources may be easier to find than Chinese sources; popular pages may crowd out a quiet but authoritative document; a paywall or blocked page can leave the system working from a snippet. Local Hong Kong questions deserve local sources, not just a translated answer built from United States pages.

There is a privacy limit as well. Treat uploaded material according to its sensitivity, not according to how easy it is to drag into a browser. For business use, decide who may create Projects, connect internal sources, export files or approve Computer actions. Convenience is lovely. A spreadsheet of customer information in the wrong workspace is less lovely.

And yes, it can still hallucinate. The citations make that easier to catch, not impossible. When the answer matters, ask for uncertainty, inspect the sources and do the boring final check. Boring is underrated. It is how expensive surprises get prevented.

12 / A SENSIBLE START

Who should use it — and how to start sensibly

Start small. Pick one task you already repeat: a weekly competitor check, a reading list, a product comparison, a long PDF or a piece of code you have been avoiding.

  1. Ask for a sourced answer.Tell Perplexity the region, date and evidence standard.
  2. Open three citations.Check that the pages are real, relevant and saying what the answer claims.
  3. Correct one thing.Ask it to remove weak sources, add an official source or separate facts from inference.
  4. Save the useful method.Put the prompt, sources and final decision somewhere you can reuse them — a Project if the task will return.

That is enough to tell you whether Perplexity AI belongs in your routine. You do not need to become a full-time prompt engineer, and you certainly do not need to hand every thought to a machine. Use it where fresh information and source trails reduce your workload; keep your judgement for the parts that actually belong to you.

Perplexity is at its best when it shortens the distance between a question and the evidence — not when it asks you to stop thinking.

13 / FAQ

Questions people usually ask

Is Perplexity AI the same as ChatGPT?

No. They overlap, especially when both can browse, but their default jobs differ. Perplexity is built around web research and cited answers; ChatGPT is a broader conversational and work assistant. The right choice depends on the task, not the logo.

Does every answer have reliable citations?

Every cited answer may give you a trail, but the trail still needs checking. Look at the publisher, date, passage and whether the source actually supports the claim. Citations improve accountability; they do not outsource judgement.

Can I use Perplexity with my own PDFs and files?

Yes. Current help material lists text, code, PDFs, images, audio and video uploads, with different handling for long files and video content. Check your account limits and privacy settings before uploading confidential material.

Are Projects the same as the old Spaces feature?

Perplexity’s current Help Center presents Projects as persistent, shareable workspaces. Product names and screens can change during rollouts, so follow the label shown in your account and read the permission settings before sharing.

Should a company use Perplexity for internal research?

It can be useful when public web sources and internal documents need to be considered together, but the organisation should define access, retention, source freshness and approval rules first. The tool can accelerate research; it does not write your information-governance policy.
